Sorry, I’m happy ~ Davichi

This song has helped me in my healing journey. So, I thought it would be the perfect song to come back with.

Davichi is a female duo who formed in 2008. The name Davichi derives from the Korean phrase 다 비치 (Da Bichi), meaning shining over everything. I think this name is perfect for them, but I might be a little biased.

I want to quickly mention the music video for the song because it is so sweet. The video entails Lee Hae-Ri and Kang Min-Kyung travelling around Budapest. They see the Christmas markets and have a meal at a beautiful restaurant. But most importantly, they are having fun. The video never fails to put a smile on my face.

As a quick overview of the song, it is, in my opinion, about recovering from a breakup; you finally feel happy again. But, there might be a part of you that feels bad that you're happy without them. I think this song reminds people that you can feel this way, but it is essential to also do and be what makes you happy.

The song starts with a piano and gradually introduces a violin. It starts slow and melancholy, the instruments remind me of waking up from a dream of the past and starting afresh.

The first verse tells us about how the protagonist of the song has finally found the motivation to go outside and get dressed up. They 행복해 보이는 사람들 속에 웃고 떠들면서 ' Laughed and talked with people who look happy' and realise they are slowly forgetting their pain, as we see in the lyrics 사라져가고 지워져 가고 이젠 아프지 않아 'It's disappearing, it's erasing, it doesn't hurt anymore'.

The chorus is my favourite part of the song because of the lyrics. It's also really catchy. To me, the lyrics are like they are pushing away past thoughts, saying they are happy. But also being respectful of the other person and wishing them the best.

Goodbye, my love, cold winter has come to our spring

I guess this is it; even if it's sad, please go

I'm happy right now; as much as I'm happy, I'm sorry

Now forget me and meet a good person

The next verse expresses how shocked the protagonist is to have moved on. They may have felt awkward initially because they missed their love. But 'like a lie', they moved on from it and forgot. With time they have healed and found their happiness.

The final chorus suggests that the protagonist is happy that the pain is finally over. 잘가 내 사잘가 내 사랑 우리 추억에 아픈 눈물이 흐르지만, 정말 끝인가 봐 이젠 너 없이 살아도, 지금 난 행복해 행복한 만큼 미안해,이제는 나를 잊고 좋은 사람을 만나 'Goodbye, my love, painful tears flow in our memories, it's really over Now, even when I love without you, I'm happy'. To me, this suggests a realisation that perhaps the protagonist's relationship wasn't as happy as they thought. They still wish their love well, but they realise that their relationship ending was for the best. Rather than looking back with rose-tinted glasses, they realise this was the right thing to do.

The music for each chorus builds in tempo and speed; this symbolises the joy the protagonist has found in being happy that it's over. The music for the verses feels more nostalgic and delicate, perhaps to show they are still adjusting to feeling this way. But as the music builds, they realise I'm over this… and I'm happy. The ending piano and violin slows but sounds happier than the beginning, allowing the listener to know the protagonist has found peace in their feelings, and truly accepted the situation.

Overall, I think Davichi's vocals are beautiful, and their voices go together so harmoniously. I find their voices very emotional and their songs to be very uplifting, even in their sadder songs. It feels like a warm embrace is comforting me. I often find myself listening to their songs when I need comfort and feel nostalgic about when I first got into Kpop.

I would love to know what you think about this song and if you like it too! Are there any songs by Davichi that you like? Or songs similar to this?

I would love to know your thoughts! Thank you as always for reading it does mean the world to me. Thank you! ^^
