We're travelling back to the 1980's, we're also in Japan for this piece. Just a brief introduction, Tatsuro Yamashita is seen as one of the founders of soft rock in Japan, some might know it as city pop.
The song Mermaid is fully in English, and really just gives me wonderful summer vibes. It reminds me of a mix between Barry Manilow and Peter Andre's mysterious girl. I hope i'm not the only one who thinks this. It makes me feel like I should be relaxing on the beach to fully enjoy the song. I also realised it also slightly reminds me of UB40. It definitely seems to have some Reggae in it. I think this mix of genre's really makes the song feel young and carefree.
Tatsuro has a very soothing voice, and has a nice range in his voice as well. The music just really makes me want to dance in the sun, which is not like me at all. When I listen to city pop, I always feel like the song is older than it actually is. Plus the lyrics to the song are really sweet and although it talks about him loving a mermaid, he could be talking about a summer romance, a little bit like Summer Nights from Grease. I really recommend giving it a listen. You feel bad for him as he has fallen in love with this mermaid and is always reminded of her when he sees the sea. But she told him that he had to find a human girl as they are very different.
This piece is a little bit shorter as I have just written a long piece for my friend on Kidz Bop, he gave me a nice star medal for surviving haha. No it wasn't that bad, and maybe if they see it they will change their music and make it better. But I hope you all enjoyed and let me know if you have any recommendations. Thanks for reading x
