This is a band I only recently came across and I love their music. They were the support act for Babymetal who I saw in February.
Creeper are a Punk Rock band from Southampton. They released their self-titled album in 2014. They disbanded for a while and came back in 2019, this year they released a new album called Sex, Death, & the Infinite Void. Though I have't listened to much of their earlier work I have listened to their new album, as well as their cover of Fairytale of New York. The band includes Will Gould (vocals), Ian Miles (Guitar, Keyboards, Vocals), Sean Scott (Bass, backing vocals), Dan Bratton (drums, percussion), Oliver Burdett (rhythm guitar) and Hannah Greenwood (piano, violin, vocals).
Though I can't speak for all of their work, Creeper have a very unique style. To me it feels like a mix between Punk Rock and 80's Goth music. There music is dark but for some reason it makes me feel hopeful. All of their songs feel different and show how versatile the band is.
I'm currently listening to Misery so that is the song I will start with. It is on the Single Misery, but also on the album The Stranger. This song is very dark, with the heaviness of the instruments it really encourages the sadness of the lyrics. The lyrics to me sound like they are talking about how someone hurt them and they can't move on from it, the line that sticks out the most to me is: 'So I wrote down a list of coroners, their names, their office phone numbers, To pronounce dead the thing we had'. This line to me, shows how they wish they could move on from the relationship. There are a lot of lines to do with death, they talk about cemeteries and coroners, painting a picture of how hurt this person is. The instruments really emphasise these feelings, playing quietly to focus on his voice, creating a sadder feeling within the song then as the instruments build it's as his anger builds.
The next song is from their new album, it's called Annabelle. This song was stuck in my head for weeks after the concert, it is super catchy. It feels a lot more upbeat than the last song. To me it sounds like they're saying even if everything is going wrong we should live our life how we want to because we all die. This feeling really comes through to me in the line 'You've got to live a little when the world just wants you sad'. The music really makes me want to dance around and just enjoy the things that I want to in my life.
The last song I will talk about it Valentine on the album The Stranger. I wanted to give a different variety of their songs as I think every song by them is unique, so I shall share some of my favourites. This song is definitely more old school Punk Rock than some of their other work. The lyrics also remind me of Nirvana's smells like Teen Spirit. I think this song in particular reminds me a bit of Cute Without the E by Taking Back Sunday, definitely an old Emo feel haha. From what I got from the song it seems to be about loving someone and giving them your all but when you're 'low' they can't accept you for it. This comes to me from the line 'I hate to tell you, but what the hell can I do?'. I would love to hear about other people's opinions of the meanings of the songs. The song does feel like a mix of Punk Rock and Emo music, I honestly love this combination of genres.
As usual thank you for reading, I really appreciate all the support, and hope you continue to enjoy my work x
